What will be covered?

This is a two day First Aid course, including accommodation and food for the weekend.

We've written the syllabus for a climbing focused first-aid weekend, and have specifically engaged these trainers to run it for Clan members.

This weekend will involve a full, accredited, 16-hour first aid course and will focus specifically on climbing scenarios, climbing injuries and situations you might find yourself in whilst climbing. It is a regulated course that is certificated through FAA and you'll gain a first aid certificate you can use for RCI and Mountain Training awards, as well as outdoor qualifications like RYA Dinghy Instructor etc.

We've designed this course specifically for Clan members to undertake the role of the first aider when in rural and the more remote regions of the UK where emergency medical assistance may be more than 30 minutes away.

You will gain the first aid skills and knowledge to competently and confidently provide first aid in an outdoor remote environment.

Some things you will learn about include:

  • Basic Life Support
  • Common Medical Emergencies
  • Wound Care
  • Medical Kit
  • Recognizing and treating Hypothermia and Heat Exhaustion
  • Getting Help

Who is running this?

We've collaborated with an external provider, WithDave.

Their instructor, Gordon, is very experienced in the delivery of first aid.

He has years of experience working in mountainous and wilderness environments, searching for, assessing, treating and evacuating casualties from remote or difficult to access terrain as a volunteer emergency search and rescue responder within South Wales.

This type of training can cost several hundred pounds per person, without even considering accommodation costs, if run commercially and not through the Clan.

We really want you to attend when you say you will.

Attendance costs will be used to cover food and accommodation.

Q&A

We  love dogs, but sadly they're not welcome on this trip

Can I come on this one if I've been on a Clan training event before?

Yes.

I don’t drive, can I come?

Yes. We will arrange lifts for people who can’t drive. Different people bring different skills – it usually works out in the end.

How can I say thank you to the trainer?

Say thank you!

How can I say thank you to the Clan?

Continue to be you. Pay it forward. We all learnt from someone, and you've supported lots of people already - keep doing that!

How can I get a longer heads up on these?

Those who give back to the Clan the most are always first in line.

So if you can't make this one, and want to be the first to hear about upcoming events - see what you can do to volunteer and help out at some upcoming events - on Wednesday, Thursday evenings and weekends.

Can my friend sign up who's not a member of the Clan yet?

These are specifically for Clan members who volunteer and give back to the Clan - so your friend won't be able to come to something like this yet.

However, if they get Clan membership, and start coming to Clan events and helping out - then as soon as they have the right skills, we'll get them onto an event like this!

Why is membership required?

We want to invest in people who invest in the Clan. Membership is part of that.

You'll need to have membership both when you signup and when the course happens.

What about the weather?

The course is likely to run indoors and outdoors in the grounds of the hut, with a warm fire burning in stove (nicknamed: Chernobyl) in the living room for us to warm us by.

The event is highly likely the event will go ahead whatever the weather. (95% likely to go ahead, 5% risk of cancellation, 0% risk of people postponed).

We may adjust the activities to the weather conditions, but there are plenty of things we can do if the weather is wet or windy or super sunny, and we'll make good decisions to allow us to get the most out of the evening.

Even in less than ideal weather conditions, we'd expect people to get a lot out of the weekend - so bringing clothes to suit the weather is recommended.

Is this compliant with the BMC's Combined Liability Insurance Policy?

No. This event will be covered by the provider's public liability insurance policy.

I signed up, and now can't make it.

It'd be ideal if this didn't happen. This event literally costs the Clan £££ and not showing up or cancelling at short notice is not ideal.

However these things do happen and the standard Cancellation Policy for training event applies here.

What food is included?

Breakfasts, Lunches, and Saturday night dinner is included in the cost of the trip.

We'll be recruiting volunteer chefs and will be looking for helpers with prep, washing up etc

Tea, coffee and milk will also be provided (the coffee might only be instant though…maybe pack your cafetière!).

It may be worth bringing some snacks and cake.

I have a special diet?

All dietary requirements and allergies will be catered for - Vegetarian, Gluten Free, Kosher, Meativore, allergic to pepper, etc - please express it on the sign up form

I can't make it for the whole trip, can I get a discount?

We can't offer you a discount. As this is a training event, you really need to be there for the whole of both days.

Where do we sleep?

We have the hut mostly to ourselves, and we don't segregate on perceived differences, put your sleeping bag in a bunk to reserve that as your place to sleep.

Do I have to volunteer?

Everyone plays a part in making weekends like this happen.

You can give us your preferences on what you'd prefer to help with, and we'll do our best to accommodate your choices - but this may not always be possible.

Is this a REC2 first aid course?

Technically no, in practice - it covers all the same things, and more.

Rescue Emergency Care (REC) is a well known and respected first aid training organisation founded in the mid 1980s by Dr Robert Phillips while working in remote healthcare and adventure rescue services.

It supplies syllabuses for 16hour first aid courses. This is not a REC2 first aid course, but covers all the same things, and produces a certificate usable by RYA, Mountain Training, British Canoeing, British Caving Assocation, BMC, UK Mountain Biking etc for their qualifications.

What does the syllabus cover?

The Climbing Clan First Aid Course is a comprehensive training program designed specifically for climbers, encompassing a blend of pre-course study and a two-day, hands-on workshop. The course requires participants to engage in 7 hours of preparatory study, including reading a First Aid booklet, watching a YouTube playlist on mountain first aid, and reflecting on personal experiences related to accidents or near misses.

Day 1 of the course begins with introductions, followed by an in-depth exploration of Basic Life Support (BLS). This includes assessing unresponsive casualties, performing chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and dealing with choking and drowning incidents. The session also covers the recovery position and basic casualty history taking. After a short break, the focus shifts to Trauma Emergencies, where participants learn to recognize and treat various injuries such as head, spinal, chest, and abdominal injuries, as well as open fractures and amputations. The morning's learnings are then reinforced through practical simulations.

Post-lunch, the course delves into common medical emergencies like anaphylaxis, asthma, chest pain, stroke, diabetes, and seizures, followed by a segment on musculoskeletal injuries, where participants practice using slings, bandages, and splints. Wound care is also covered, including the management of lacerations, abrasions, blisters, and burns. The day concludes with discussions on assembling a medical kit suitable for various environments and scenarios, and methods of calling for help in emergencies.

Day 2 starts with understanding common UK illnesses and their treatments, followed by managing health issues in cold environments, including hypothermia and frostbite. Participants then engage in scenario-based discussions on these topics. The course then addresses challenges in hot environments, like heat exhaustion and stroke, and common medical issues encountered during long hiking trips. After lunch, the focus shifts to the marine environment, including the treatment of drowning victims, and practical sessions on improvised carry methods using climbing equipment.

The course wraps up with more scenario-based discussions, BLS revision, and a debrief session. Throughout, there's an emphasis on real-life climbing scenarios, trauma management, and common emergencies, with a focus on simplicity, practicality, and using available resources effectively. The course aims to empower climbers with the knowledge and skills to handle emergencies confidently, using equipment they are likely to have on hand, and to inspire them with survival stories and practical, evidence-based practices.
